The 1921 Census of England, Wales, Scotland, and the Channel Islands was conducted on the night of 19 June 1921, providing a detailed snapshot of the population in the years following the First World War.
Householders were required to complete a return listing everyone who had spent the night in the property. The census recorded a wide range of information, including:
- The name of the street, road, or location
- The house name or number
- The number of rooms occupied
- The full name of each person present
- Their relationship to the head of the household
- Marital status
- Age at last birthday
- Occupation and employer details
- Place of birth
- Details of marriage duration and number of children born to the marriage, including how many were still living
- Whether an individual was recorded as having any infirmities, using the classifications of the time
In addition, the 1921 Census placed greater emphasis on employment, asking for more detailed information about occupations, industries, and employers, reflecting the changing economic landscape of post-war Britain.
Census forms were distributed to households in advance and collected shortly after census night. All information was intended to reflect circumstances exactly as they were on 19 June 1921, including visitors and travellers, who were recorded at the address where they spent the night.

- The census recorded everyone who spent census night in a particular household, including visitors and travellers.
- Once you’ve found your ancestor, try locating the address on a map. Nearby churches, cemeteries, and local institutions may hold additional records.
- Look for siblings and extended family members. It was common for relatives to live together or close by, so nearby households can provide valuable clues.
- If you’re struggling to find someone, try broadening your search. Use only a first name or combine details such as approximate birth year, birthplace, residence, or known family members.
- Be aware that some entries use initials instead of full first names. Searching by first initial can help uncover these records.
- Spelling and handwriting can vary significantly. If a name isn’t appearing, try alternative spellings or substitute letters that look similar.
- Maritime records were handled differently. In earlier censuses, ships in port were recorded separately, and crews at sea were sometimes missed. From 1861 onwards, special shipping returns were used to include British vessels worldwide.
